WARNING: Santa Ana Wind Warning Issued For Thanksgiving into Friday; Moderate To Strong Event Projected; Images Inside

The atmosphere is responding now to a bump in the values and the intensity of this wind event is going up.  A moderate-strong Santa Ana Wind Event is projected for Southern California along with increased fire hazards Thanksgiving through Friday and this is a direct Cajon Pass High Profile Vehicle Warning.  Read on for details, including the wind intensity model …

Well here we go, another Santa Ana Wind Event almost a month from the last strong one.  A trough of low pressure will enter the Great Basin north of us on Thanksgiving Day.  This will bring a rush of cold/dry air into the region, which will bring upper support along with it.  Level 5 conditions will now be seen in the Santa Clarita Valley areas, while level 6 conditions will be seen in the Cajon Pass areas.  Level 6 means it is not recommended for high profile vehicles to travel because as you saw with the last event, they do blow over.  This will be considered a moderate/strong event region-wide and advisory level winds are likely in the Riverside/San Diego Mountains as well, mainly on Friday with a slight easterly component working in.

This is a mountain wave event so areas in the San Gabriel Valley will see some gusty conditions as well.  My models indicate this affecting Wrightwood as well, which it normally does not during a Santa Ana.  Upper support will assure the mountain wave activity affects the entire mountain range, including the Kern Mountains.  As per the models, the LA Basin will be quiet.  You will however have fog in spots tonight into Wednesday, more widespread on Thursday morning for those areas just before the drier air arrives.

No appreciable storm systems on the horizon yet … December forecast will be released either just before December 1st or on it.

8. Extensive widespread damage.
7. Trees are broken or uprooted, building damage is considerable. – High Profile Vehicle Roll-Over CERTAIN.
6. SOME Trees are broken or uprooted, building damage is possible. – High Profile Vehicle Roll-Over Likely, Do NOT recommend Traveling in this zone
5. Slight damage occurs to buildings, shingles are blown off of roofs. HIGH WIND WARNING CRITERIA – High Profile Vehicle Roll-Over Possible if weight is not corrected.
4. Twigs and small branches are broken from trees, walking is difficult. Anything 4 and above will have blowing dust if conditions are dry, which does reduce visibility and make driving difficult …
3. Large trees sway, becoming difficult to walk. POWER SHUTDOWN THRESHOLD during any high fire risk. WIND ADVISORY CRITERIA
