Santa Ana Wind Watch Issued For Tuesday into Wednesday Below Passes and Canyons; Fire Weather Warning Included

Southern California Weather Force has issued a Santa Ana Wind Watch effective Tuesday into Wednesday of this week. These winds will be warm this time, so this is a full-fire weather warning as well.  Gusty winds will hit the high desert on Monday beforehand, but this main article is for the Santa Ana Winds so read on for details …

An inside slider will move to the northeast of the forecast area in what has been the pattern since October.  Storms have been riding up and over a ridge to the west way out in the Pacific Ocean.  This causes them to miss us and generate a thermal gradient from the Great Basin to our coasts.  When this happens, pressure gradients get strong and out come the Santa Ana Winds.  Warm temperatures in place Tuesday through Thursday will keep the fire weather warning in place.

Temperatures today are in the upper 80s for the basin areas.  With the offshore flow and compressional warming, I expect them to be over 90+ degrees during the Santa Ana Wind Event.  It is quite rare to have warm/hot Santa Ana Winds in March, but it will be treated just like the dangerous fall events and fire hazards, just on the other side of the calendar.  It is worth noting that Brawley will see the first 100F temperature sometime around Saturday.  Just like all season, we have wind events and then a storm pattern.  We will see the same in April.  This heat is short-lived, with a lot of April being colder.

To find out what risk your area is in, visit the member section to control the risk map. The SCWF Member Section maps remain active for free through this system.  You can click here to see them.  Zoomable maps for wind will be available for this event.

Long Range indicates that we are not done with systems into Southern California and that we should hang onto a later ending season even through May.
