Inland Heatwave Expected After May 26th For Southern California; Seesaw Pattern Continues With Cutoff System End Month That Is Being Monitored

907Shares

Despite the cooler temperatures we are seeing now across the region with an upper level low in the area, this will break by the middle of this next week, meaning after the 26th of this month.  As stated in previous articles, this will be the next heatwave for the area.  I will say that it will follow the ‘rules’ of traditional summertime patterns where we have heat inland and in the deserts, but comfortable temperatures at the coast.  This is due to an upper level cutoff system to the southwest of us with LIMITED tropical moisture that will bring the southerly flow in.

This does not signal the onset of the monsoon season yet.  Each year there is something called a monsoon heat blast where we see temperatures in the inland empire over 110F due to a southeasterly (offshore) flow with a building monsoon ridge over Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado, known as the four corner region.  I do not see that right now.  I say this every year that I am waiting for that hint from mother nature to call on the beginning of the four corners Southwestern United States Monsoon Season, which goes from June 15th through September 15th on average.   This year we will see above normal conditions for the monsoon across the Southwestern United States.

This is an interesting pattern as it is a cutoff and we all know these cutoffs can do what they want.  If it remains out there and does not come inland, it could easily grab some moisture from the tropics to make things a bit interesting come end month …

We will see a summer that is opposite of last summer where last summer had colder than normal temperatures and less monsoonal intrusions.  It looks like this summer will have a hotter than normal plan with some intrusions likely.  These intrusions will come in the form of easterly waves, which at times if coming from Mexico and Arizona are some of the strongest ones we see.  Southern California Weather Force is ready for anything that comes.
