Arctic Blast Sets Sights On Southern California This Next Week; Low Elevation Snowfall Possible

0Shares

A cold pattern that will bring a couple of arctic fronts through Southern California will be the coldest of the season thus far and lies within my forecast a couple of months ago about this season having low elevation snowfall with pending Pacific Storm Diamyo so read on for details …

Pacific Storm COVID lived up to the name.  Winding down this evening into tonight wind-wise, it had the strongest Santa Ana Winds in over 10 years, in some areas in over 30 years.  Gusts across the prone zones of Los Angeles and Ventura County ranged between 60 and up to 100 mph in some areas.   Many trees and powerlines were knocked down, including the ever-popular fences.

Now we had into my long-range call.  That is the arctic pattern.  While it can be considered slightly late, I did mention this season was ripe for it and said “Through the NEXT month” which is January.  You may see that arctic by clicking here.  This pattern will start this weekend and slowly get colder as we move through this next week.  Snow levels will be down at the High Desert floor so areas like Lancaster, Hesperia, Ridgecrest, Barstow, and even Las Vegas will be in-line for snowfall.  Depending on how this upper system sets up, some areas in the Inland Empire could see the snowfall as well.  I’m always touchy on mentioning those risks until we get closer to the event due to having to calculate ocean influence.  A snow level of 2,800 FT with sticking snow through and below 2,000 is possible so flakes could also fly out in the SCV zones behind the frontal influence.

So that is the next focus for now.  I’ll introduce forecasts over the weekend as well with a weaker system in the next day or so.
