Site:  SouthernCaliforniaWeatherForce.com has issued a Thundersnow Warning effective now through Sunday morning …

Date:  12/31/16 at 11:40am PT

Forecast: Major Pacific Storm Elsa will be coming into the forecast area today … already showing signs of convective (storm) activity in Kern County before the noon hour so she seems on track.

Heavy snowfall is likely in the Kern County Mountains through this evening and overnight tonight.  The snow level will rapidly drop through 4,000 FT and remain that way through the night.

For the LA/SBD/RIV County Mountains however the snow-level this evening will start high, around 6000-7000 FT and then drop to 4,000 FT after the 8pm to 9pm hour.

Snowfall amounts will vary because of the type of system this is.  If she hits right, we could see a lot of snowfall in all mountain areas … however if she gives one quick and powerful hit it and quit it … amounts will be less than predicted.  Snowfall model here is an interesting one … showing much more for Gorman Pass than even Big Bear Lake so … it has to be watched.

Still .. this warning is for heavy snowfall RATES and the risk of lightning along with that snow …
