The first day of astronomical summer is After June 20th, but the first day of meteorological summer is always June 1st.  The pattern is responding to this as we have had a hot day and will have a hot week ahead for the inland areas so for the rest of the month, read on for details …

June is usually a hot month to begin with so no surprise it’ll be a hot month.  Some Junes however are colder than normal, which is a rare thing.  This year however will not be the case.  As you saw from my other article (click here) the named tropical system has indeed formed, Blanca, well south of our area in the Eastern Pacific Tropical Basin.  The moisture from that is streaming north into Mexico, activating thunderstorms in Eastern Arizona and New Mexico.  As the article states, the ridge has not formed yet so we need to wait another month for the influx of moisture from Mexico to move into our region for the upswing in monsoon activity.  We will have a couple of cutoff lows that could pull some moisture in, but we need the four corners ridge for a stronger influx.   This is not being seen this month at the moment.

The ridging and southerly flow however is going to promote a number of heatwave events, some of which will be dangerous, presumably towards the last week of the month.  June is the month for weddings; mine included, so any anniversary plans should be perfect for everyone.  The below average temperatures will be where fog and overcast will hang on the most, being the LA, VT, SBA,SLO County Coastal areas as per the map above.

Long-range does have evidence this will be a hotter than average summer under fading La Nina conditions, conditions similar to summers like 2013 where Death Valley almost broke the high-temperature record.  With that case, we also had a number of monsoon moisture intrusions due to an active hurricane season in the Eastern Pacific.
