Southern California Weather Force has issued two alerts, the Severe Thunderstorm Watch and the Weather Advisory. So let’s start with the strongest and move to the weakest. ALL alerts go from now through tonight and yes this is, as always, a very detailed forecast outline to read. I introduced the storm coverage model yesterday, and with the new CPU power I got with YOUR HELP to expand, I also have my alert system algorithm as it takes all four models I have now and gives an idea what type of alert to place you in.
Severe Thunderstorm Watch – This alert is due to an easterly wave coming into the area. Instability is increasing along the San Diego/Riverside/San Bernardino Mountains as we speak and severe storms are expected to pop off today. There is a an enhanced risk of marginally severe hail and damaging winds with them as you can see in my models below. Storms today will also form along the JNTP/29 Palms zones, southeast through Desert Center. Storms also could form in Imperial County with outflow from either. Additional activity is possible overnight into early Monday morning, a reason this goes all night.
Weather Advisory – Issued for areas west of the Mountains, mainly the Inland Empire areas. Storm flow is east to west today so anything off the mountains could send outflow into these areas and bring a chance of showers OR thunderstorms. Storms are also possible in Wrightwood, which would send outflow north to the El Mirage Convergence Zone and bring thunderstorms to some metro high desert areas. Furthermore, the southern half of Clark County, NV will also see thunderstorms today.
