Upper Level Low To Bring Thunderstorms To Parts of the Southland Through the Weekend

Nominal zones of the monsoon affected areas in the mountain and desert regions are seeing storms today and will again on Friday, but an upper level low backing west could bring them west of the mountains into the metro areas.  Read on for details.

First and foremost if this low doesn’t go a bit more south, San Diego could miss this altogether so if you are there, this isn’t really for you.  Storms tomorrow in the mountain/desert regions, especially the Low Deserts, will be under the influence of strong upper divergence from the upper level systems moving toward us.

This divergent section with the trough is enough to produce severe thunderstorms, especially in Imperial County on Friday.  May need a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for the county and it looks like the flow is that of aiming at the metro cities in Imperial County.

The upper level low’s divergence in the Low Desert may bring a tornado risk as well … so that is being watched, Friday into Saturday.

Now with the upper backing into the Martin Storm Diamond … an imaginary diamond-shaped zone southwest of Southern California that produces widespread thunderstorms when an upper low is placed within it, thunderstorms will start breaking out on Sunday and last into Monday.  Wrapping east flow around the northeast quadrant will bring widespread activity to areas in the metros, with San Diego at the moment sitting out of this.  A number of watches will be needed with such a gully washer.  Deep moisture will allow for higher rainfall totals.
