A storm front is moving through the western forecast area now and will continue surging eastward through the day, bringing a quick round of heavy rainfall and isolated thunderstorms for some. Read on for details.
Moderate to heavy rainfall from the storm front is possible across the forecast region, with rainfall extending up through the High Desert as well later today due to deeper-layer moisture being present. Given what we’re seeing on radar now … the following storm front times are as followed;
Vandenberg AFB – 9am
Santa Barbara – 11am-12pm
Ventura and Bakersfield – 1pm
Los Angeles and Lancaster – 4pm
Orange County – 6pm – 8pm
Inland Empire to High Desert – 7pm – 9pm
San Diego – 9pm – 11pm
Our thunderstorms model is showing a pretty intact frontal zone move through today. This frontal zone will start out in the Vandenberg AFB area this morning and move east through the day and into the evening for the OC/IE areas where it will end.Strong upper divergence profiles with a sharp trough-axis will make it possible for isolated thunderstorms to form within this front. Furthermore the model does show isolated thunderstorm potential surrounding the Delano forecast region, in the Northern Kern Valleys.
At the current time, the front will bring a quick round of moderate to heavy rainfall within some of the cells … and only isolated thunderstorms. Some of you will not hear the thunder … but it will remain on the ‘isolated’ side. The northern extent of any thunderstorm activity is the Southern Antelope Valley and Metro High Desert zones … the eastern extent is the Western Inland Empire …
Winter Weather Advisories are in place for areas in the Kern, LA, San Bernardino, and Riverside Mountains above 5,000 feet with flakes in the Gorman Pass being possible overnight into Sunday morning. The rest of the region will see 1-3″ of snowfall … but a quick hit and high snow levels to start will keep those levels down. Snow levels are starting at 7,000 feet before dropping toward the end of the front … so all areas should see rain at first followed by a change-over to snow at the end of the front. Again the Kern Mountains will hold onto this light snowfall on and off through tonight and Sunday morning.
This quick hitting front will move out overnight and be gone by Sunday morning for all metro areas.
Given the deep-layer moisture with it, do feel leakage of showers is possible in the Palm Springs and Morongo Basin areas tonight …
