A strong 6.5 magnitude (downgraded from 6.8) struck offshore Northern California this morning.  What does that mean for Southern California?  Because of this 6.5 magnitude being on the plate boundary, do feel we need to be on watch for our area to start talking as a result of the seismic waves shaking things up.  Read more for details …

The last time this happened was in June 2005.  The faults seemed to be releasing energy back and forth from Northern to Southern California and back again.  As of theorized back during those times, faults connected to the system do ‘talk’ to one another.

Because of this 6.5 magnitude being on the plate boundary, do feel we need to be on watch for our area to start talking as a result of the seismic waves shaking things up.

A magnitude 6.5 for that area is not all that uncommon as it is near where a few plate boundaries connect.  However, being Japan shook, Mexico shook … the plates are moving and talking to each other … so IF anything happens .. the most likely time would be when a nearby larger quake hits … interacting with our fault system.  Therefore just as a precaution … keep your EQ plans close-by.
